Getting started with RAE AI
MCP connects your AI agent to a running RAE editor. Describe your task in plain language: the agent can read game data and change it through the editor.
The short version — 3 steps
Restart RAE
Open your game files and leave the editor running.
Restart your agent
Start a new chat: Codex → GPT 6 Astra or Claude Code → Opus 5.5, medium.
Send the prompt below
Click ‘Copy prompt’, paste it into your agent’s chat and send it.
First prompt: check the connection
Use the rae-mcp skill and RAE MCP connection. Check the connection with rae_status. Show which RAE instance you are connected to, which game files are open and which operations are available. Do not change or save anything. If the connection is unavailable, say so.
The reply should list actual open files and RAE status. Check that the paths belong to your project. If the agent only explains MCP, ask it to call rae_status through the connected tool.
Start here
Restart RAE and your agent
After installing MCP, fully close and reopen RAE and the agent selected in the installer. Run both on the same Windows computer under the user account used for installation. Keep RAE running.
Open your game data
Open your project data in RAE, for example elements.data. Questions about quests, shops or spawns need the corresponding files. A copy of your project is a useful place to try your first edits.
Start a new agent chat
Open Codex, Claude Code or another connected agent. Select your model and paste the prompt below. If the agent asks to use the rae tools, grant access for this task.
Example prompts
Replace 12345 and the item name with your own values. Review the plan and affected records first. Applying changes updates the open editor; saving writes to the original files and may include your unsaved manual edits. RAE AI works with files, not the live game server: deploying your changes is a separate step.
Find an item and its sources
Through RAE MCP, find the item named ‘ITEM NAME’. If several match, show their IDs and let me choose. For the selected item, find where it can be obtained and where it is used. State which files were checked and which data is missing. Do not change anything.
Understand a quest
Through RAE MCP, find quest ID 12345 and explain its requirements, completion conditions and rewards. Check its item and NPC references against available data. Report issues and unverified links. Do not change anything.
Preview a price change
Through RAE MCP, find the shop entry for item ID 12345. If there are several variants, show them first. For the selected variant, preview a 20% reduction from its current price. Show the old and new price with units and affected files. Preview only: do not apply or save.
Create an item from an existing one
Through RAE MCP, prepare a copy of item ID 12345 named ‘Event reward’, with an automatically allocated free ID. Leave the original unchanged. Show what will be copied and which references will remain. Preview only, without applying or saving.
Review → apply → save
Apply the shown plan through RAE MCP if it is still current. If the data changed, show a new preview. After applying, read the affected records again and report the result. Do not save the files yet.
Troubleshooting
Does RAE need to be running? Will the agent launch it?
Yes. Start RAE yourself and keep it open while you work. The MCP server runs inside the editor; the agent connects to its local address. Installation adds the connection and skill, not automatic RAE startup. Closing RAE makes MCP unavailable. The agent can open supported game files through an already running RAE.
The agent cannot see RAE MCP
Check that this agent was selected during installation, then fully restart it. Look for the rae connection in its MCP settings. If missing, rerun installation from the RAE AI menu. The installer configures your local user profile; remote or cloud sessions do not connect automatically.
RAE is not responding
Check that RAE is running and the AI licence is active. Read the installer warning or RAE message: if Windows denied the MCP address reservation, follow the fix shown there. With multiple RAE instances, verify the instance and paths returned by the first prompt.
A file is missing or a change is blocked
Ask the agent to list available files through RAE MCP and report the exact restriction from rae_status. Open the required file in RAE, or ask the agent to select it from discovered files. Support depends on format, version and build. Do not bypass a restriction by writing game files directly.
Using Cursor
In the installer, click ‘Cursor: copy User Rules text’ and paste it into Cursor → Customize → Rules. Restart Cursor and run the first prompt.
Saving or undoing changes
To save, ask: ‘Save the changed files through RAE MCP and report verification results; first list other unsaved edits that would be included.’ To undo, ask: ‘List recent RAE change sets and prepare to revert the group [name].’ Check the chosen group and any conflicts first.
